Pool decks are one of the more fun projects we get to do. You’re not just pouring concrete — you’re creating the space where people are going to spend their summers. Here’s what it costs and what you should think about before you commit to a contractor.
Concrete Pool Deck Costs in Tennessee
Most homeowners in Middle Tennessee pay $6–$18 per square foot for a concrete pool deck, depending on finish. A 500 sq ft deck — typical for a standard in-ground pool — runs:
| Pool Deck Type | Cost Per Sq Ft | Total (500 sq ft) |
|---|---|---|
| Broom-Finished Concrete | $6–$10 | $3,000–$5,000 |
| Exposed Aggregate | $8–$12 | $4,000–$6,000 |
| Stamped Concrete | $12–$18 | $6,000–$9,000 |
| Resurfacing/Overlay | $5–$10 | $2,500–$5,000 |
Larger decks (800–1,200 sq ft) are more common than people expect, especially if you’re adding a covered area or outdoor kitchen. Those projects can easily reach $15,000–$25,000 for stamped work.
What Affects the Cost
Size
More square footage costs more total, but the per-foot rate usually drops on larger jobs. A small 300 sq ft deck might run $9–$10/sq ft; a 900 sq ft deck might be $7–$8/sq ft for the same finish. Mobilization, setup, and concrete ordering all have fixed costs that spread more efficiently on bigger jobs.
Finish
Plain broom finish is the most popular choice for pool decks and honestly looks great — clean, neutral, slip-resistant. Stamped concrete is the upgrade: you can do a travertine pattern, slate, or wood plank look that turns a standard backyard into something that feels like a resort. Exposed aggregate is a middle option that looks more interesting than plain concrete and holds up very well around water.
Drainage
Pool decks have to be sloped — away from the pool and away from the house — so water doesn’t pool anywhere. Getting drainage right takes planning and precision during the pour. Don’t hire a contractor who doesn’t bring this up when you’re discussing the project.
Sealer and Slip Resistance
Stamped and smooth concrete around a pool absolutely needs a non-slip sealer. Some contractors use a glossy sealer that looks great but becomes slippery when wet — that’s not appropriate for a pool deck. We use a slip-resistant additive in all pool deck sealers. It’s a small detail that makes a real safety difference.
Heat
Tennessee summers are brutal. Dark concrete absorbs heat and can get uncomfortably hot to walk on barefoot. Lighter colors (cream, tan, light gray) stay significantly cooler. Something to think about when you’re choosing color — it’s not just aesthetics.
Is Stamped Concrete Worth It for a Pool Deck?
In our experience, yes — if you’re going to invest in an in-ground pool, the deck is a big part of what the space looks and feels like. The deck is what your guests see. Plain concrete looks fine, but stamped concrete genuinely transforms a backyard. The cost premium over plain concrete (roughly $5–$8/sq ft more) is small relative to the total pool installation cost and the improvement in appearance is dramatic.
The caveat: stamped concrete requires sealing every 2–3 years to stay looking sharp. Factor that into your decision.
Resurfacing vs. Replacement
If your existing pool deck is dull, stained, or mildly cracked but structurally sound, resurfacing is worth considering. A concrete overlay can give it a fresh look for $5–$10/sq ft versus $8–$18/sq ft for full replacement. We’ll give you an honest assessment of whether your slab is a good resurfacing candidate or whether replacement makes more sense long-term.
